Ode to stinky adenoids

Beck's ENT warned us (complete with wry smile) that Noodle's breath would smell badly for a week or two while the adenoid beds healed. Now, I'm not too much of a dummy. The way that he said/warned me with a playful smirk and the voice dropping down a tone as it does when one is delivering a warning. I told myself, "Self...be prepared for a stink that is obviously beyond description."

You just can't be prepared for a stink that defies description no matter how hard you try. After even one day....I MEAN OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!!!! No baby should EVER have a smell that bad eminating from them (and we know about really offensive diapers).

We are on day six post op and the stink is as strong as ever. It is seriously making me nauseous at times (like when I am lying in bed next to him at night and he wants to wrap his chubby sweet baby arms around my neck for a snug...I can't do it! You may think I am a bad mother, but unless you can survive this stink, I ask you to suspend judgement.). There is a fog that permeates the room when he has been in it for a couple of hours.

Grandmama came for their usual Friday fun (except this time she spent the night so that Philip and I could FINALLY have a night alone at a hotel...hehe). The next morning when I returned she said. "I really do think that it is an injustice not to write about THE STINK on your blog." So, here ya go, mom...

BTW, I double dog dare our family and friend poets to battle it out for the best "Ode to stinky adenoids poem" (Andy, Great Grandpa, Philip, Mike, Grandmama, Uncle Buddy....I have high hopes for you)

Huh? What?

Yesterday 3/10/08 Beck had a couple of really fantastic surgeons gang up on him. We had to be at Children's Hospital at 5:30AM for his 7:30 surgery. He was first on the roster which was truly benevolent. It was a piteous request that I squeaked at the surgeons and am truly grateful that they went the extra mile to grant my wish.

One of his surgeons has adopted several children from China and his wife is one of the social workers at the International Adoption Clinic. I feel certain that it is their compassion for the trials that Beck has already endured in his short existance that moved them to go that extra mile.

Beck had much needed ear tubes put in, his adenoids removed, and another more private procedure done. The ENT said his ears were a nightmare and that Beck probably has been dealing with a 40-50 percent hearing loss for who knows how long. The tubes should correct that problem.

Immediately out of the recovery room, he was one anguished, thrashing, confused, and ticked off toddler. I could barely hold onto the thrashing, screaming, kicking sugarlump as he made my job more difficult by yanking at his IV tubes and groping some of the freshly operated areas he was not to touch.

He has made a remarkable recovery thus far and if I am not mistaken, he seems to be walking about with more confidence and balance as well as the non-stop babbling repetoire we have been dying to hear.

Since we have no pictures of the day, here are some gratuitous pics from late Feb. of Beck's early attempts at learning to stand from the middle of the room. We did not pick the right camera for quick action photography, but I think you get the idea.

Job well DONE!!!
